Trophy Trout Hunting in Iceland

Written by Stjani. Posted in News.

fishing iceland trophy troutWe are extremely pleased to announce the addition of a new fishing area for us, the now world famous, Lake Thingvellir. The lake is famous for enormous brown trout and four varieties of Arctic char in amazing natural setting and landscape. The lake is very big and to be successful you have to know what you are doing and where you should go. So up until now we've not had guides that know the lake well enough for us to offer trips there. This has changed and now we are proud to announce that we have started a co-operation with one of the most successful trophy trout hunters in Iceland who will be your guide while fishing on Lake Thingvellir

This guy really knows his stuff and has countless brown trout over 10 pounds landed from the lake and several over 20 pounds. Yup - that is right, several over 20 pounds. A common trout to catch in the lake is from 6 - 10 pounds and the chances of catching a double figure fish are quite high with the chance of catching brown trout over 20 pounds, all natural, all wild, all Ice Age Brown trout.

The prime time for this fishery is short and due to the fact that we will only be running trips with this one guide we urge you to make sure to book your spot on the Lake Thingvellir sooner than later. We offer day trips and multi day expeditions to the lake as well as offering trout combo trips with the lake included. We can tailor make any kind of trip you want so please direct any questions you may have to This email address is being protected from spambots. Tight lines,

Stjani Ben

Spotlight: Vatnsdalsa River

Written by Stjani. Posted in News.

When we go fishing for Atlantic salmon we not only look at the catch rates but also the character of the water and the setting the river is located in. We've certainly found what we are looking for in the Vatnsdalsa River. We want to be able to chase silver in prime fly water and have the chance of catching the big one. Not to mention having fun in the meantime. The Vatnsdalsa River is in our opinion the perfect river for fly fishing. It's big enough to use short double handed rods if that is what you fancy, yet small enough for a single handed rod if that is your preferred game. If you prefer the latter we do recommend using 8wt rods as there is a good chance for a big one. In fact, in the last 6 years the average weight of caught fish is 4,03 kg and 71,03 cm with 362 fish over 90 cm landed. That makes 60 per year on average. The season 2013 was a good one with 1116 salmon landed, the biggest one 107 cm long.

The river is incredibly diverse and with the inclusion of it's tributary the Álka River you have the chance to fish in open meadows where the river flows majestically through fields surrounded by mountains as well as the canyons at the upper part of the Vatnsdalsa River and, if you like rock climbing, the canyons of Álka River. Access and wading is for the most part very easy except in, as mentioned, the upper part of the river and the Álka. But the fishing beats are so long that you will never be bored if for some reason you don't feel up for the climb down to the river in those two areas.

Without a doubt the most famous pool on the river is the Hnausastrengur Pool, sometimes referred to as "Sea Pool". This pool is one of the best salmon pools in all of Iceland and here most of the really big boys are caught. With fantastic drift this is an amazing place to hitch or fish with a small fly on floating line and witness the reaction the fly makes covering dozens of big salmon. Now if that doesn't get your heart going you should maybe think about taking up another sport.

The lodge is a home away from home and offers en suite facilities in each of the bedrooms, two nice sitting rooms with free WiFi, dining room, a hot tub and a sauna. The attentive staff and the wonderful chef will make you feel welcome and taken care of. The food served every night and at lunch time is prepared by love using the best there is of local ingredients.

The Vatnsdalur Valley is simply stunning with geological phenomenon at the very mouth of it. The surrounding mountains tower over you majestically while fishing and create that relaxing feeling of fishing in such a beautiful valley. All in all a trip to the Vatnsdalsa River is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life, an experience unlike any other.

Available rods in the 2014 season can be seen by clicking here and here. All enquiries for fishing in Vatndsdalsa River should be directed to Björn K.
