About the river

The Varma River is located near the small town of Hveragerdi some 30-40 mins drive from Reykjavik. The river is fished with a maximum of 4 rods daily and is perfectly suited for both day trips as well as longer trips. In 2011 it was popular by our clients to either day guided day trips to this river or to opt for a longer trip with guide only on the first day.

For an adventurous angler this river offers mountainous beats where the water is faster and the surroundings are stunning. The mid section is on the edge of town and then in the lower section the river slows down and flows quietly through meadows with deep pools.

In April and early May there is a spring run of sea trout as well as sea trout getting ready to leave the river. On top of that there is a strong stock of brown trout and Arctic char in the river.

The river is a catch and release fishery and only fly fishing is allowed.

Accommodation

There is no actual lodge for this river but if you would like to stay longer than a day we can recommend very nice accommodation for a price range that suits you.

Tackle

In the spring we recommend using 6-7wt rods as conditions sometimes call for casting heavy rigs. Also the fish can be very big in this river and sea trout over 5 kilos are not uncommon.

As the summer months arrive we recommend lighter rods as the flies get lighter, the fish get more vary and as such lighter lines are recommended. 3-5wt rods with floating lines would then be your weapon of choice.

In terms of fly selection we recommend several streamer patterns as well as caddis and midge imitations in all life stages.
