Spotlight: Vatnsdalsa River

Written by Stjani. Posted in News.

When we go fishing for Atlantic salmon we not only look at the catch rates but also the character of the water and the setting the river is located in. We've certainly found what we are looking for in the Vatnsdalsa River. We want to be able to chase silver in prime fly water and have the chance of catching the big one. Not to mention having fun in the meantime. The Vatnsdalsa River is in our opinion the perfect river for fly fishing. It's big enough to use short double handed rods if that is what you fancy, yet small enough for a single handed rod if that is your preferred game. If you prefer the latter we do recommend using 8wt rods as there is a good chance for a big one. In fact, in the last 6 years the average weight of caught fish is 4,03 kg and 71,03 cm with 362 fish over 90 cm landed. That makes 60 per year on average. The season 2013 was a good one with 1116 salmon landed, the biggest one 107 cm long.

The river is incredibly diverse and with the inclusion of it's tributary the Álka River you have the chance to fish in open meadows where the river flows majestically through fields surrounded by mountains as well as the canyons at the upper part of the Vatnsdalsa River and, if you like rock climbing, the canyons of Álka River. Access and wading is for the most part very easy except in, as mentioned, the upper part of the river and the Álka. But the fishing beats are so long that you will never be bored if for some reason you don't feel up for the climb down to the river in those two areas.

Without a doubt the most famous pool on the river is the Hnausastrengur Pool, sometimes referred to as "Sea Pool". This pool is one of the best salmon pools in all of Iceland and here most of the really big boys are caught. With fantastic drift this is an amazing place to hitch or fish with a small fly on floating line and witness the reaction the fly makes covering dozens of big salmon. Now if that doesn't get your heart going you should maybe think about taking up another sport.

The lodge is a home away from home and offers en suite facilities in each of the bedrooms, two nice sitting rooms with free WiFi, dining room, a hot tub and a sauna. The attentive staff and the wonderful chef will make you feel welcome and taken care of. The food served every night and at lunch time is prepared by love using the best there is of local ingredients.

The Vatnsdalur Valley is simply stunning with geological phenomenon at the very mouth of it. The surrounding mountains tower over you majestically while fishing and create that relaxing feeling of fishing in such a beautiful valley. All in all a trip to the Vatnsdalsa River is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life, an experience unlike any other.

Available rods in the 2014 season can be seen by clicking here and here. All enquiries for fishing in Vatndsdalsa River should be directed to Björn K. Rúnarsson via e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by telephone to +354 8200446. Björn has been fishing this river since he was 5 years old and guiding there since 1996 so the river has a special place in his heart.

fishing huso seatrout 34Due to cancellations of 3 out of 5 rods we can now offer a fantastic combination of salmon and sea trout fishing on the Huseyjarkvisl River for the dates September 22. - 25. 2014. These are the last 3 days the salmon beats are open so the whole river is in play. The total of 5 rods fishing will share over 20 kilometers of prime fly water and two guides for these 3 days of fishing. We will be targeting fresh run sea trout in diverse but challenging conditions. Since we started fishing these dates never have we left without landing at least a few sea trout over 70 cm and in 2013 a whopping 77 male was landed as well as a 94 cm hen salmon among others. For the last two years conditions have been unfavorable but the two years before that the groups fishing landed 51 fish (in 2010) and 61 fish (in 2011). The trip in 2011 was featured in Trout & Salmon and written by our friend Toby Coe and made this river so popular.

This is your chance to get your foot in the door with fishing for sea trout on Huseyjarkvisl in September. The river is completely sold out in September apart from 2 rods in early September and this slot has proven to be most popular. For further information please see this link:

For any further details or bookings please contact myself via e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by telephone to +354 867 5200. More information on the river can be found here (salmon beats info) and here (trout beats info) but once again I would like to remind you that the whole river is in play here so the whole river will be fished by all during these 3 days. The guides on this trip will be myself and Björn K. Rúnarsson whose sense of humor and charm is known worldwide... not to mention his incredible guiding skills. Food is served in the lodge by a local lady who takes great pride is using local ingredients for the dishes she serves. Only 3 anglers will stay in the lodge so private rooms are included for these 3 rods now available.
